| Gloria Swanson was born in 1899. She was a huge star during the period of silent films, and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. However, there was a setback in her career with the onset of “talkies”. She is remembered for her role in Sunset Boulevard, with which she made a comeback. This movie depicted her own life, as she played a silent era star who was not remembered by the people of the present day.
Gloria May Josephine Swanson was born in Chicago. Her father was a soldier of Swedish-American descent, and her mother was a Polish-American. In the beginning Gloria Swanson had no intentions of joining show business. She worked as a clerk in a departmental store after finishing her education.
Gloria Swanson got into films when she was touring the Essanay Studios. She asked if she could do a role in the movie, The Song of Soul. She was given a small role as an extra but was taken on for several movies after that amongst which were His New Job. This movie starred and was also directed by Charlie Chaplin.
This was the beginning of her movie career and she then moved to California. She did a series of comedy films with Mack Sennet and Bobby Vernon and signed up with Paramount Pictures in 1919. Gloria Swanson worked often with Cecille B DeMille who made her a romantic star with films like The Affairs of Anatol, Male and Female, Don’t Change Your Husband and Why change your Wife. |
